Getting Your Website Noticed

So you have built it....your website.  You have either invested endless hours or tons of money designing it.  So now the site is up on the Internet.  Must be getting lots of business now?    Not a chance, at least not a chance you fulfilling the potential it has. ( Kind of like spending all that money to be listed in the Yellow Pages, and either they don't deliver the book, or they list you in the wrong section. ) Why then go through all the trouble, and not reap the rewards?  Because most people don't understand how the Internet works, much less how Search Engines or Web Directories work.   The Internet has the potential of letting the WHOLE WORLD stop by your shop.  But how do they find you?   Traditionally if someone doesn't know you exist, but they know what product or information they want, then they use a search engine or web directory.  These complex software products are awake 24/7/365 scouring the Internet to make sense out of the billions of pages and millions of virtual storefronts.   The send out "spiders" which are software-searching devices that looks at all components of a web page/website. So how do they decide? How do the decide how to rank you compared to a similar page from a competitor, versus ranking you at all?  They do so by searching the title of your site, the content, the links, and anything that makes up written text on a web page.   This includes the infamous metatags that the surfing public never sees when they view a page, but exist within the software code that makes up the page itself.  They look at the title and the description, the keyword section, the actual html name of the page, and the content section ( content is what the public can see).  They find out how much sense and congruency all these components have to decide what the page pertains to.    This means that if you may have a page that is different than your front page, it may get listed based on the topic it discusses.  This also means that if that is the only page the search engine likes, then that is the only chance you have of people getting to your site through that search engine. This is called entering in through the side or back door. They may actually never get to your front page if they don't stick around long enough.    What is the goal?   To get as many pages listed as possible, and ranked as high as possible.   Then there are all sorts of ways that people happen upon your site.  But wait!!! Is that all there is to it?  No!!! With all consulting companies spending hours figuring out the protocols that the different search engines and directories use to rank a page, times are a changing.  What search engines are doing now is looking for the Internet to help rank itself.  How might you ask?  By some method, search engines can look at a page on a website and immediately tell how many sites are linking in to it.  This shows the engine that other sites find it valuable.  Not only that but the search engine actually reads the text that makes up the link from the outside site, thus determining that the site actually is telling its customers what they will find of value if they click on the link. If a website on baseball has 100 sites linked to it, and of those sites, 60 of them have links, made up of text that says "how to hit a baseball" then the search engine believes that is what the site has of value.  So not only do you have 100 links pointing to you, but also descriptive links.  WOW!!!  So what does this mean?  This means that you get more traffic.  More traffic means more potential sales. This means more money, some of it coming in while you sleep!!! 

   So how do you get links? You can put together a great site with great content that other want to link to.  You can trade them, but this is time intensive.  Or you can submit them to FFA pages. (Free For All )  This has good and bad points, but in terms of links into your site it increases the possibility that when one of those search engines happens across you site during the 24/7/365 cycle, that it will see many sites pointing to yours. The problem is that most FFA pages end up dropping you as they add others. So submitting has to be regular and can be time intensive.   The bad point is that most of these FFA pages ask you for your information and end up putting you on an email list and you start getting spammed.  How do you avoid this while getting the benefit of links coming in?  Set up a free mailbox that you don’t care about.  Many place offer free email boxes, such as Hot Mail and Yahoo. It is worth the time.  Then you just provide that email address to the FFA pages. 

   So how do you get submitted to all those thousand of FFA pages to make it worthwhile?  Well you can either buy a software package yourself or run it on a slow modem connection, or you can subscribe to a service that owns the software and does it for you.  Viola!!!
